They’ve Got Me Eating Seaweed…

I’ve eaten a lot of strange stuff since I’ve lived in Asia. Pig’s ears were probably the low point.

Not all is bad though.

I’ve become rather a fan of seaweed.

I grew up by the sea. Here’s my home town of Plymouth, England:

So I guess it’s understandable that I’d have some sort of affinity with the liquid stuff and all that lives in it.

But when I was growing up by the sea, I’d never have imagined eating seaweed.

My love affair with seaweed started when I visited Hong Kong. I had miso soup for the first time, and it had a fair bit of seaweed floating in it.

I developed an instant love of miso soup. Not least because when hot the soup swirls around making neatly hypnotic patterns.

I’ve since found all kinds of seaweed containing foods. Seaweed coated snacks are great, from peanuts to Pringles. There’s something rather satisfying about the taste of the sea that seaweed brings to the table. Plus I guess it’s salty tasting, which is always an attractive proposition.

My latest find is these seaweed snacks from Thailand:

They’re kind of tubes made from seaweed, and infused with a range of flavours. In this case they’re spicy paprika flavoured.

Not sure if they’re healthy or not – the ingredients list is only listed in Thai. But I’d never have thought I’d go this crazy for seaweed.
