Jurassic Park

A story of my walk in the park that was anything but…

So one sunny afternoon in Bangkok I decided to check out Lumphini Park. Bangkok is a pretty bustling sort of place, so I thought I’d try to get an hour or two’s peace and quiet.

Well it turned out that going to the park was the last thing I should have done.

In the entrance to the park there was a large encampment of anti-government protestors. All pretty noisy as there was a rally going on at the time.

I walked on a bit further and there were large numbers of people doing keep fit exercises to loud music.

I went for a sit down, only to be hassled by a pushy fortune teller.

I tried to walk for a bit and search for another bench. But most of the pathways were busy with joggers doing a circuit of the park.

I found a run-down gym in the park. That was kind of neat.

Finally, I reached the boating lake. Yeah, that was kind of weird.

There weren’t many people in boats, it must be said. But what really caught my eye was this creature swimming towards me:

A kind of water-borne SR-71...

I’ve seen plenty of Geckos in Bangkok, but this was no ordinary lizard!

When it reached landfall, its huge size became apparent:

Definitely my David Attenborough moment:

A close encounter with a Monitor Lizard...

It seemed to be interested in sucking up ants with its huge forked tongue. But maybe that was just a diversion for its real intentions…

I think a tubby Thai guy is too much even for a large lizard to swallow. So then it made off in the direction of the boats for hire. I guess it was looking for small children or something:

Master of his domain...

Sure, enough, it swam toward the tied up boats, and had a good look around inside the hull of one of them:

That wasn’t all that was lurking in the boating lake. I also spotted these sea tortoises:

So all in all a pretty weird afternoon in Bangkok’s most popular park.
