Anti-Japanese Feelings in China

All the time I was in China, I felt that mentioning anything to do with Japan was like walking on egg shells.

Anti-Japan feeling runs high in China. And if something goes wrong in China, the authorities will often try to blame Japan, or foreigners in general.

In China I also learned to expect the unexpected. But even I was kind of surprised to see this exercise book on sale in my local student supplies book store:

Kick Japan out of the Senkaku (Diaoyu) islands exercise book cover

Kick Japan out of the Senkaku (Diaoyu) islands exercise book cover

My Chinese is around HSK 1 standard, but I guess this cover implies kicking the Japanese out of the disputed Senkaku Islands.

Just for impartiality, I guess I should revisit Japan and look for an equivalent Don’t Give Senkaku to the Chinese book.

In the long run though, this kind of fervent nationalism helps nobody. I’m glad that back home in England we only really become flag waving loonies on the Queen’s anniversary or during important football matches.
